Gerard Pique has been in controversy yet again after last night’s post-match comments. The Spanish side couldn’t manage to get their win against Portugal even after being the favorites. The 5-time Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo stood up for his side in a yet another decisive match.
Gerard Pique believes that his side played fantastic football and created numerous chances. Though, the reigning European champions were more clinical with their finishes than the former world champions.
“We have had more chances. They had three shots and scored three goals, games go one way and you have to face it.”
Pique further claims that the match was affected by the early decision of penalty against Spain. Cristiano Ronaldo won the penalty after the contact from his Real Madrid teammate, Nacho Fernandez. The Portuguese number 7 then went on to convert it from the spot in the 4th minute of the game.
According to Pique, the end result of a draw is a good one after the crucial start of the match with a 1-0 deficit to a 3-3 draw.
“Finding yourself in the opening game of a World Cup with a penalty against you in the second minute, you have to leave with good feelings after how the match went.”
The Barcelona man who once shared the dressing room with the showbiz footballer of Portugal, in Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson. The Spanish number 3 made some bold remarks on Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese scored an iconic hattrick against Spain.
“Cristiano is prone to diving.”
The Spanish goalkeeper, David De Gea, made a mistake which cost his side the crucial win. The current Manchester United man couldn’t keep the ball after Ronaldo’s shot in the 44th minute. The fumble resulted into Portugal side’s favor giving them the 2-1 lead just before half-time.
Gerard Pique holds no grudges with his teammate defending the goal and claims that De Gea will be performing as he has been renowned for.
“He has been doing this for many years and we all face it, I’m sure that in important moments he will be how he has always been.”
Pique continues to extend his support for the ex-Atletico Madrid goalkeeper and gives him the vote of confidence. The Spanish side has suffered significantly after the sacking of Julen Lopetegui but the former world champions are doing their best to improvise the situation inside the dressing room.
“A lack of confidence? Not at all, it’s what you want to suggest. In the dressing room, it’s clear that David is our goalkeeper, he’s shown it for years.”
That being said Spain will now look forward to improvising on their performance and try the best to win the group with the remaining games vs Morroco and Iran.
