The coach who many believe will be managing Argentina NT in the near future has spoken about the star player of the country, Lionel Messi. The Barcelona man has been defended by many fans saying that the teammates of the 5-time Ballon d’Or winner do not provide him sufficient services to convert and create chances.
Though many people earlier believed that Messi is a player who can carry a team on his own caliber without being dependent on his teammates. The argument whether the 30-year-old is only a system player of Barcelona or can he adapt to any game plan has now caught more fire than before. Not only fans but even the football coaches and pundits have made statements supporting one of either ideology. Sir Alex Ferguson was the first one in 2015, to point out that Messi cannot perform outside Barcelona.
Recently another coach who happens to be the countryman of Lionel Messi has been critical of his performance outside Barcelona. Diego Simeone who currently manages Atletico Madrid, a side which has challenged the big clubs of Spain; Barcelona and Real Madrid, is not happy with the lack of commitment shown by the captain of Argentina NT.
Various Spanish news outlets including El Confidencial and COPE, have reportedly obtained an audio recording of a conversation between Diego Simeone and his assistant at Atletico Madrid, Germán Burgos.
In the reported conversation, Simeone can be heard comparing Messi to his arch-rival, Cristiano Ronaldo who has been shining bright like a diamond in the tournament so far as he leads the golden boot race, also the hat-trick against Spain has sprinkled enough of stardust. The Portuguese has scored all of the 4 goals of his NT in the FIFA World Cup 2018 which makes it 100 percent of his contribution.
Messi, on the other hand, has not been able to deliver a decent performance as he is yet to register any assist or goals. This has not gone down well with Atletico Madrid coach who can be heard in the audio recording saying:
“We have to realise that Messi is very good, but it is clear that he is very good because he is accompanied by extraordinary players, so the question I ask is: If you had to choose between Messi and Ronaldo, for a normal team, who would you choose?”
This may impact the AFA and also would not go down well if Simeone wishes to manage Messi in his career. The current coach Jorge Sampaoli is in shambles and several reports claim he will be sacked before the third group stage game of Argentina against Nigeria which will be a must win if they wish to avoid an early flight back to South-America.
Several reports also claim that it will be the final time when Messi, Mascherano, Aguero, Higuain, Di Maria, Banega, and Rojo will be wearing the Argentina jersey if they don’t manage to get past the group stage of FIFA World Cup 2018. Messi already had retired after the 2016 Copa America final after losing to Chile but this time it is said to be a final goodbye.
